Renovation Works in Operational NICU - SEVERE CONTAMINATION CONDITIONS -

Renovation works are well known for creating high risk airborne infections. There is an unavoidable increase in the circulation of dust, which is an excellent vehicle for transporting fungi, moulds and spores such as Aspergillus. Adjacent graphics show figures during 10 months renovation in the N.I.C.U. which was already equipped with a closed HVAC-system equipped with hepa filters.

Despite these existing hepa filters, and the known preventive measures, like installation of physical barriers (plastic sealing, partitions and intermediate spaces), Aspergillus spp. Concentrations were unacceptably high. Installation of MedicCleanAir® - Infection Control Units proved severe reduction of airborne contamination.

NORMAL WORKING CONDITIONS WITHIN THE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT - Haematology / Oncology department of S. Croce Hospital Cuneo Italy

Clinical, laboratory and microbiological survey during 2 years:

Prevention of Invasive Aspergillosis in immune-compromised patients by high-efficiency air filtration MedicCleanAir® - devices. - Istituto Tumori Università di Genova and Istituto di Igiene Universita di Genova - Italy

As prior medical studies have proven, Hospital Infections occur mainly within the hospital itself and rarely come from outside. As air is the main 'transporter' of all airborne contamination this study proves that air quality is of utmost importance to prevent contamination from going from one department to another.

COST - RELATING STUDY ON THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MEDICCLEANAIR DEVICES - Haematology department of S. Croce Hospital Cuneo Italy.

Study (2 years) on MedicCleanAir® devices for air filtration, a low-cost very effective method of managing ambient Aspergillus spp colonization. - Haematology Department and Hygiene and National Cancer Institute of Genoa Medical School Italy.

Every hospital is bounded by economic resources. Practically every hospital has money problems. It is therefore of great importance to determine at what level MedicCleanAir® Mobile Hepa Units may not only contribute to the human but also to economic situation of the hospital itself.

Above mentioned study certifies that the investment in MedicCleanAir gives a yearly return of more than 8 times the initial investment itself (saving of € 161.000/year). Moreover, the study did not take into account that by excluding infections - and therefore reducing lay days/hospital bed days - the waiting lists are reduced, more patients could be handled and thus increasing the hospital general turnover. Nor did they take into account that doctors could increase their performances (more operations) and complete departments could handle more patients due to that fact.

Although the study was directed only to Aspergillus infections, the MedicCleanAir® Mobile Hepa Units adsorb all other contaminants as well. Because of the above, the amount gained by implementation is exceeding far more the amount of 8 times return on its investment. (Could easily be 12 times/year)

Summary & Example of a practical scientific and medical test

Location

Luik - Liège Belgium, department of haematology/oncology. Click here to receive more detailed information regarding the hospital)

General

These tests were carried out during 2 days during which particle counts and CFU counts were performed.

The variables such as air ventilation systems, meteorological conditions, passage of visitors, conditions in the department itself etc. have not been taken into account. These are usually necessary to be able to make a firm clinical study. Nevertheless, the figures show the impact of the MedicCleanAir® Mobile Hepa Units and are to be considered as significant.

Introduction

The results of the 2 tests (particles and CFU count) show already the following points of view:

  1. that the level of contamination of the ambient air is higher than ever expected,
  2. that probably not only the rooms where tests were performed are contaminated, but the complete department and beyond are contaminated as well.
  3. that the preventive measures regarding air quality will have to be taken seriously in order to improve the present air quality and hygiene level of the department.

Situation

Date: October 2005
Dimensions of the room: D346cm x L500cm x H260/360cm + bath room D180cm x L210cm x H260cm
Total Cubic metres: 60 m3
Measurement Technique particles: MetOne type 228 number of particles per cft - >= 0.3 µm
Measurement Technique CFU's: voir annexe Dpt. Hygiène

Good to know:

  • the number of particles in the rooms vary between 2.4 mio et 4.000.000/ cft³
  • the number of particles outside the hospital amounted to 8.400.000/cft³ on October 6th 2005
  • room temperature varied between 25°C and 27.5°C
  • humidity in the room varied between 42% et 60%

Remarks

The figures give a very good idea of the existing situation and level of contamination in that haematology / oncology department; counts are rather high. To be correct it is to be said that these tests cannot be medically supported for 100% as too many variables were not taken into account.

Nevertheless, MedicCleanAir® Mobile Hepa Units were able to reduce the contamination - CFU level as well as particle level - with 60 up to 100%.

However, the contamination level should be < 1 cfu/m³ within the patient's room and MedicCleanAir® therefore advises following steps to be taken:

Recommendations

  1. One MedicCleanAir® Pro Unit in each room: operational level 1 during nigh time, level 2 during daytime and level 4 when there is no patient in the room,
  2. Two MedicCleanAir® Pro Units in the corridors - operational level 2 - always.
  3. One MedicCleanAir® Pro Unit at the entrance of the department, with prefilters attached to the Unit, and equipped with the key remote control device - unit to be operational at level 3.
Additionally, we advise to put automatic door closures to the double entrance door. These doors should stay closed as much as possible.
  4. One MedicCleanAir® Pro Unit in the visitor's elevator compartment - entrance, to be installed on a shelf close to the entrance of the department, equipped with the key remote control device. - Unit to be operational on level 3. The access (double doors) to the department should be equipped with these automatic closing features as well.
  5. The access to the children's playground of the adjacent department should stay closed at all times. If not, doors should be equipped with the automatic closing features, and we advise to install one MedicCleanAir® Pro Unit in the airlock between the two departments.
  6. Perform a periodical particle and CFU- count.
